Beau Dieu, Gothic sculpture at Cathedral of Amiens, France.
Beau Dieu is a Gothic stone figure on the western facade of Amiens Cathedral, showing Christ holding a Bible in his left hand. His right hand is raised in blessing, while his feet rest on symbolic creatures below.
The sculpture was created in the first half of the 13th century as part of the artistic program at the cathedral. It has stood at the central portal beside apostle figures since then.
The figure shows Christ stepping on a lion and dragon, which represent pride and evil, while serpents below symbolize death and sin.
The work is visible year-round at the cathedral entrance and can be easily viewed from the street. Morning or early afternoon hours offer the best lighting for viewing and photographs.
Local people gave this figure the name 'Beautiful God' because of its noble facial features and the fine stone folds of the garment. The name has persisted in common usage to this day.
