Cloister of Saint-Sever-de-Rustan abbey

This cloister in Tarbes is a medieval structure with stone arches, vaulted ceilings, and carefully crafted architectural details. Four wings surround a central courtyard arranged in the typical layout of a Benedictine monastery.

The structure was built in the 15th century as part of Saint-Sever-de-Rustan Abbey in the Pyrenees. When the original site faced decline, it was purchased by Tarbes in 1890 and reassembled in Jardin Massey.

The arcaded corridors show where monks once performed daily prayers and copied manuscripts during the medieval period. The open courtyard at the center was where the rhythm of monastic life unfolded.

Entry is through the main entrance of Jardin Massey, where visitors can explore the grounds freely. The best time to visit is during good weather when sunlight brings out the stone details.

The cloister was taken apart stone by stone and reassembled at a completely different location, making it an example of early heritage preservation. Such relocations of entire medieval structures are extremely rare today.
