Pallavaram, Historic neighborhood in Tambaram, India
Pallavaram is a neighborhood in southern Chennai that includes Zamin Pallavaram, Old Pallavaram, Essa Pallavaram, and Cantonment Pallavaram. These sections form a mixed fabric of residential blocks, small shops, and street markets.
British archaeologist Robert Bruce Foote found stone tools from the Paleolithic Age here, making the region one of the earliest inhabited places in South India. The discoveries proved human settlement over thousands of years and later attracted researchers from around the world.
The name derives from the Pallava rulers who once controlled this area and after whom many places in the region were named. Residential areas cluster around places of worship that are visited daily and shape the rhythm of everyday life for local residents.
The railway station connects the area to Chennai's suburban network and offers regular train services to the city center. State highways run through the neighborhood and allow access to surrounding districts.
The administration changed in November 2021 from an independent municipality to incorporation into the Tambaram City Municipal Corporation. This shift brought new public services and altered how the neighborhood is organized today.
