Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary

Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary, Wildlife refuge in Kollam district, Kerala, India

Description

Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected forest area in the Western Ghats with tropical evergreen vegetation and four rivers that flow into the Kalladayar River. The landscape includes dense woodland, grasslands, and water systems that support diverse plant and animal life.

History

The sanctuary was established in 1984 as a protected area for the forest ecosystem. Its name comes from a hardwood tree species that grows naturally throughout this region.

Culture

The communities living near this sanctuary practice traditional methods to protect the forest and take part in environmental education programs. You can see how people here connect their daily lives with conservation work.

Practical

The sanctuary has five camping sites where visitors can stay overnight and experience the forest. It is best to visit with a guide or ranger since the area is large and paths through the woodland can be challenging to navigate.

Did you know?

An artificial lake created by a dam within the sanctuary provides a habitat where water and forest meet and support different animals. This combination of water systems and woodland makes the area home to species that need both environments.
