Bara Gumbad

Bara Gumbad is a monument complex featuring a central mausoleum topped by a large dome, accompanied by a mosque with five arches and a nearby guest house. The three structures sit within Lodi Gardens and form a cohesive architectural composition.

Built in 1494 under Sultan Sikandar Lodi, this structure introduced Delhi's first complete dome design in architectural practice. The innovation established a new standard that influenced how buildings were designed in the region afterward.

The interior surfaces display geometric patterns and floral designs that show how Islamic and Indian building traditions came together. Visitors can see the care that craftsmen put into decorating every part of the structure.

The site is open daily from sunrise to sunset with free entry for all visitors. You can walk around at your own pace and find shaded areas in the surrounding gardens to rest.

The identity of the person buried within remains unknown to this day, despite the structure's prominent size and architectural importance. This mystery adds to the intrigue visitors experience when exploring the grounds.
