India Habitat Centre, Convention center in Lodhi Estate, New Delhi, India.
India Habitat Centre is a convention facility in Lodhi Estate spanning nine acres with approximately 97,000 square meters of built space distinguished by brick facades and central courtyards containing stone sculptures. The complex comprises five interconnected building blocks with six restaurants, basement parking for around 1,000 vehicles, and spaces occupied by various international organizations.
The complex was completed in 1993 by American architect Joseph Allen Stein, blending modern architecture with principles of sustainable design. It was conceived as a model for environmentally conscious urban development and community integration.
The centre hosts ongoing art exhibitions, theatre productions, book readings, and musical performances that shape the city's cultural calendar. Its four galleries and auditorium serve as gathering places where artists and audiences connect, fostering local creative communities.
The complex is straightforward to navigate, with clear paths connecting the building blocks and courtyards that provide spaces to pause and rest. Visitors should allow time for exploring the different areas, especially if planning to visit multiple galleries or attend events.
The facility incorporates solar panels and natural ventilation systems woven so subtly into the architecture that many visitors overlook them entirely. These green technologies were implemented in the 1990s, making the building an early example of sustainable construction in India.
