Tiger Hill is a mountain in Darjeeling that sits at about 2,590 meters and offers sweeping views across to Mount Everest, Mount Kanchenjunga, and the eastern Himalayan range. The summit features a temple and is reached by a winding road that climbs from Darjeeling town.
The name comes from the colonial era when Bengal tigers roamed the surrounding forests before they vanished locally. The place became a popular viewpoint for British residents to watch the sunrise during their time ruling the region.
Two temples line the route upward, one honoring the goddess Durga and the other dedicated to Shiva, reflecting the spiritual beliefs that matter to local people. Visitors often stop at these sacred places to pray or sit in quiet reflection.
Aim to arrive before 3:30 AM to get a good spot, since sunrise is the main draw for visitors. Jeep services from town reach the summit in about 30 minutes, so early departure is necessary to make the timing work.
Just before sunrise, the snowy peaks of Kanchenjunga glow in shades of red and gold, which draws photographers from near and far. This natural light show lasts only a few minutes before fading as the sun climbs higher.
