Palashi Monument, War memorial in Palashi, India
The Palashi Monument is a memorial on the eastern bank of the Bhagirathi River in Kaliganj, West Bengal, India. It features a gold-colored statue of Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah and stone inscriptions that mark the site of the 1757 Battle of Plassey.
In 1757, the Battle of Plassey took place near this site, ending with the defeat of Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah by the British East India Company. That outcome opened the way for British dominance over Bengal and, over time, much of the Indian subcontinent.
The gold-colored statue of Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah draws many visitors from Bengal who see this figure as a symbol of resistance against colonial rule. Standing before it, one can read the inscriptions that give context to what happened on this ground.
The site sits outside major urban centers, so plan enough travel time to reach it comfortably. Visiting in the morning tends to be easier, as the area is less crowded and the heat more manageable.
The Bhagirathi River has shifted its course over the centuries, which means the current riverbank no longer matches the ground where the troops actually faced each other in 1757. Visitors standing at the monument are therefore not standing on the exact spot where the battle unfolded.
