Teatro Comunale Mario Del Monaco, Opera house in Treviso, Italy.
Teatro Comunale Mario Del Monaco is an opera house in the center of Treviso, northern Italy, built with a classic horseshoe layout and multiple tiers of balconies. The stage is large enough for full opera productions, and the gilded decorations on the balcony levels define the look of the auditorium.
The theater was founded in 1692, making it one of the earliest public opera houses in the region, before a fire destroyed most of the building in 1868. The original facade survived and was kept as part of the reconstruction that followed.
The Toti Dal Monte International Competition takes place here every year, drawing opera singers from many countries to perform on this stage. Sitting in the horseshoe-shaped auditorium, visitors can feel how closely the city of Treviso identifies with operatic tradition.
The theater is on Corso del Popolo in central Treviso and easy to reach on foot from the train station. It is worth checking the program in advance, as the season generally runs from autumn through spring.
The building has carried four different names over its history, including Teatro Onigo and Teatro Sociale, before being renamed in 2011 after the tenor Mario Del Monaco, who was born in Florence but grew up in Treviso. He is widely regarded as one of the great dramatic tenors of the 20th century.
