War memorial

War memorial, War memorial in Piazza Vittoria, Treviso, Italy

This war memorial on Piazza Vittoria features a tall column made of golden Trani stone, topped with a bronze sculpture representing victory across different domains. The structure is flanked by relief blocks that frame the monument and tell stories through carved imagery.

The memorial was created following a national design competition won by architect Cesare Bazzani. Its opening in 1932 commemorated a significant period in Italy's past and reflects the values important to the nation at that moment.

The relief carvings on the side blocks show scenes of wartime life created by artists such as Bernardino Boifava. These images tell a visual story of heroism and sacrifice that shaped how people remember those they honor here.

The interior is open to visitors, with a spiral staircase that climbs to the top of the structure for wide views across the city. Plan to visit during daylight hours when you can best see the relief carvings and the surrounding square from above.

Two fountains stand on either side of the memorial, each carrying symbolic meaning for those remembered here. A decorative iron gate studded with bronze leads visitors toward a small votive chapel integrated into the site.
