Pizzoferrato, Italian comune
Pizzoferrato is a small commune in the Province of Chieti in the Apennines situated on a hillside along the Sangro river. The settlement consists of narrow winding streets lined with old stone buildings and is surrounded by dense forests of beech, oak, and fir trees.
The settlement originated in the Middle Ages from three small villages named Pizzo Superiore, Pizzo Medio, and Pizzo Inferiore, many of which were destroyed by a natural disaster. During World War II, the town received a bravery medal for its resistance against occupiers and fighting for Italy's freedom.
The name Pizzoferrato comes from medieval times and refers to the rocky location of the place. Residents celebrate a traditional festival every September where they wear colorful local clothing and carry copper pans filled with flowers up to a hillside church, reflecting the community's living customs.
The village is situated on a hillside and is best explored on foot as the streets are narrow and winding with limited traffic. The settlement offers basic lodging and dining options with traditional local products such as soppressata cured meat and local bean varieties.
The place was the birthplace of Bruno Sammartino, a famous Italian wrestler known as the Italian Stallion who set records as a long-time world champion. A statue was erected in 2017 to honor this local hero.
