Roccascalegna

Roccascalegna is a hilltop settlement in the Province of Chieti built with old stone houses that climb up a slope beneath towering cliffs. The structures huddle close together following the natural terrain, creating the tight layout of a mountain village.

The castle was built in the 11th century and controlled the valleys around the settlement. It served as a defensive stronghold for routes that carried trade through the region.

The village church sits at the heart of the settlement and shows how faith shaped daily life for people here.

Walking through the village requires navigating narrow passages and steep slopes, so comfortable shoes are important. Allow time to wander the streets slowly and get oriented to the layout.

Inside the castle sits a chamber with chains set into the walls, where medieval lords once questioned prisoners and delivered verdicts. This room shows how authority was exercised in those distant days.
