San Vito Chietino, Coastal commune in Province of Chieti, Italy

San Vito Chietino is a coastal commune in the Province of Chieti that sits on a rocky promontory overlooking the Adriatic Sea. The settlement occupies an elevated position that offers natural protection and sweeping views of the water below.

The settlement maintained an active port during the Roman imperial period that continued operating until the 10th century. This harbor served as an important hub for maritime commerce throughout the Adriatic region.

The town celebrates its patron Saint Vitus each year on June 15 with traditional festivities that bring the entire community together. This celebration reflects how local residents maintain their spiritual and social bonds.

The town can be reached via the A14 motorway with an exit at Lanciano or through the coastal road SS 16 Adriatica. Planning your route in advance helps ensure a smooth arrival and allows you to explore the surrounding coast if desired.

The coastline features traditional wooden fishing platforms called trabocchi, which local fishermen built in the 18th century as innovative fishing stations. These hand-constructed structures remain visible today and demonstrate the craftsmanship and ingenuity of earlier generations.
