The Benedictine monastery, established by the Lombards in 752, transformed Nonantola into a significant religious center during the High Middle Ages period.

The municipality maintains direct transportation connections to Modena and Ferrara, serving as a regional hub for agricultural production and industrial activities.

During World War II, the town protected 73 Jewish children and helped their escape to Switzerland, earning the War Cross for Military Valour.
