Nonantola

Nonantola is a municipality in the Province of Modena located in the Po Valley and spreads across fertile agricultural lands. The town sits about 20 meters above sea level and lies roughly 10 kilometers from Modena.

A Benedictine monastery was established here in 752 by the Lombards and turned the settlement into an important religious center during the High Middle Ages. The abbey shaped the region's history for centuries to follow.

The Abbey of San Sylvester shapes the town's identity through its Romanesque form and role as a spiritual focal point for the community. Visitors today experience this religious landmark as the heart around which local life continues to revolve.

The town is easily reached by public transportation with direct connections to Modena and Ferrara. The flat terrain makes it straightforward to explore on foot or by bicycle.

During World War II, the town helped 73 Jewish children escape to Switzerland in a remarkable rescue effort. This act of courage was so significant that the municipality received the War Cross for Military Valour.
