The museum occupies spaces within an ancient monastic complex, displaying sacred art collections through two main exhibition sections focused on diocesan and abbey history.

Established in 1999, this institution safeguards over 4,500 historical documents, including records related to Charlemagne and Frederick Barbarossa from the Abbey's archives.

The museum collection features religious artworks from churches in the Modena-Nonantola Archdiocese, including paintings by Simone Cantarini and Giuseppe Maria Crespi.

The facility maintains wheelchair accessibility and received 13,200 visitors in 2019, offering educational workshops, a restoration laboratory, and library services.

The Treasury Room exhibits rare woven fabrics dating back to the monastery's foundation period, alongside precious reliquaries containing fragments of the Holy Cross.
