Lugo, Administrative commune in Emilia-Romagna, Italy
Lugo is a commune in the Province of Ravenna in Emilia-Romagna, located roughly halfway between Bologna and the Adriatic coast. The center features palaces, a fortified stronghold, and theaters from various centuries arranged along narrow streets and squares.
The settlement was first recorded in the 8th century and later came under shifting control by several noble families. In 1597, rule passed to the Papal States and remained until Italian unification.
Locals gather in summer under the arches of the Pavaglione, a covered area once used for silk trading. The tradition of shopping and chatting there on market days remains unchanged for centuries.
Most sites lie within a ten-minute walk from the central square. A stroll under the arcades provides shade on hot days and leads to shops and cafés.
The Francesco Baracca Museum displays the original combat aircraft from World War I that the pilot flew. The room also preserves his personal letters and uniforms in the building where he was born.
