Teatro Rossini, Opera house in Lugo, Italy
Teatro Rossini is an opera house in the center of Lugo, in the Emilia-Romagna region, with four tiers of boxes and a gallery above them. The hall holds around 450 seats and also welcomes guest productions from opera companies based in Bologna.
Construction began in 1760 to a design by Ambrogio Petrocchi, and Antonio Galli Bibiena later completed the interior, including the stage and seating. In 1859 the original Teatro di Lugo was renamed in honor of the composer who had grown up in the city.
The theater takes its name from Gioachino Rossini, who spent part of his youth in Lugo and whose memory is still felt in the city today. Inside, the gray-blue geometric patterns and floral frescoes give the hall a look that sets it apart from more standard venues.
The theater sits in the center of Lugo and is straightforward to find on foot. Those planning to sit in the upper tiers should be prepared for steeper stairs, while the lower sections are easier to reach.
Restoration work uncovered original stucco decorations from the 18th century that had been hidden beneath later layers of renovation. The same work also brought to light paintings from 1819 that had been covered over for many years.
