Polistena

Polistena is a commune in Reggio Calabria province, situated at 254 meters in the Plain of Gioia Tauro among ancient Magna Graecia settlements. The town covers approximately twelve square kilometers and houses a museum connected to its municipal library alongside local art collections.

The town underwent complete reconstruction following a devastating earthquake in 1783, designed according to geometric plans by Neapolitan architect Pompeo Schiantarelli. This rebuilding shaped the community's layout and appearance that remains today.

The local museum displays historical objects and artworks by regional artists, including the nationally recognized sculptor Francesco Jerace. Visitors can explore the artistic heritage through these collections.

The town is easily accessible from the surrounding plains and offers good orientation through its regular street layout. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and prepare for the hilly surroundings.

During Spanish rule, the town operated its own mint, producing coins in 1732 and 1753 that demonstrated its economic significance in the region. This coin production revealed its standing as an independent economic center.
