Castiglione d'Intelvi, Mountain municipality in Lombardy, Italy
Castiglione d'Intelvi is a former municipality in the Alps of Lombardy, in the province of Como, sitting at about 892 meters above sea level. It is now part of the larger municipality of Centro Valle Intelvi, formed when several nearby villages merged.
The village was an independent municipality until 2018, when it merged with neighboring villages to form Centro Valle Intelvi. Before that, it had carried the name Castiglione d'Intelvi only since 1863, when the suffix was added to tell it apart from other places with the same base name.
The settlement takes its name from a medieval castle, and residents mark their patron saint with celebrations that shape the local calendar. These traditions connect people to their shared identity and roots in the valley.
The village sits in the mountains and is reached by road through a winding valley, so allow extra time for the drive. Weather can shift quickly at this altitude, and warm layers are useful even in summer.
The name of the place comes from a medieval castle that once stood there and gave the settlement its identity. Although the castle no longer exists, its name has stayed with the village across the centuries.
