Sassello, Municipality in Ligurian Apennines, Italy
Sassello is a small commune nestled in the Ligurian Apennines within the Province of Savona. The village sits at an elevation of around 405 meters and is surrounded by wooded mountain slopes in the region inland from the coast.
Sassello first appears in a 10th-century imperial document and subsequently came under the rule of different noble families. The 16th and 17th centuries brought iron manufacturing that became the economic foundation of the community.
During the ironworks period between 1570 and 1670, Sassello developed a literary tradition with local writers producing works in the regional dialect.
The territory extends partly into the Mount Beigua Regional Park, offering numerous trails for mountain hiking and outdoor activities throughout the year. Visitors should bring appropriate clothing and gear suited to the elevation and variable mountain weather conditions.
