Santa Marinella, Coastal municipality in Metropolitan City of Rome, Italy
Santa Marinella is a coastal town along the Tyrrhenian Sea featuring several kilometers of sandy beaches with clear, accessible waters for swimming. Located roughly 60 kilometers northwest of Rome, the town combines natural beach sections with waterfront restaurants, cafés, and beach facilities.
The area was known in ancient times as Punicum and served the Etruscans as an important trading port for the nearby city of Caere. During the Roman period, numerous villas were built near the shore, reflecting its strategic and economic importance across the centuries.
The town draws many visitors during summer festivals where residents showcase traditional food, crafts, and local music tied to maritime and rural heritage. These gatherings reveal how the community maintains its connection to seaside traditions and countryside customs.
The best time to visit is between May and September when weather is warm and dry and all beach services operate normally. The town is easily reached by train, and once there you can walk to explore beaches and the town center, with level terrain throughout.
The Castle of Santa Severa rises between two beach sections and was originally built as an Etruscan fort, later adapted by Romans and then reinforced in the medieval period. Visitors today can walk through its layered structures and see how different eras built upon one another.
