Winter Line, German defensive fortifications in southern Italy

The Winter Line extended from Minturno through Monte Cassino to the Sangro River, forming three defensive belts across the Italian peninsula during World War II.

Field Marshal Albert Kesselring established this defensive system in November 1943 to prevent Allied forces from advancing toward Rome through central Italy.

Monte Cassino, an ancient Benedictine monastery within the defensive line, became a central point of military conflict, leading to its destruction in 1944.

The defensive system incorporated concrete bunkers, machine gun positions, barbed wire barriers, and extensive minefields across forty miles of mountainous terrain.

French Expeditionary Corps achieved the first major breakthrough of the Winter Line on May 11, 1944, enabling Allied forces to advance through the Liri Valley.
