Polish Cemetery at Monte Cassino

The Polish Cemetery at Monte Cassino is a burial ground for fallen soldiers situated on slopes between Point 445 and the abbey. White tombstones line the hillside paths, forming a solemn memorial arrangement in the midst of the historic landscape.

The cemetery was established following the Battle of Monte Cassino in May 1944, when Polish forces captured the strategically important abbey. The site was developed to honor those who lost their lives during this pivotal military campaign.

The tombstones display three different designs: Latin crosses for Catholics, Orthodox crosses, and Stars of David. This variety reflects the different faiths of those buried here.

The cemetery is located near Cassino and is open to visitors who can explore the grounds and read informational panels. The visit is best enjoyed during clear weather, when the sloped pathways are easier to navigate.

General Wladyslaw Anders, commander of the Polish forces at Monte Cassino, requested that his ashes be buried among his soldiers after his death. This final wish was honored, making him part of this memorial space.
