Crespi d'Adda, Industrial mill town in Capriate San Gervasio, Italy
Crespi d'Adda is a workers' settlement with a cotton mill in Capriate San Gervasio in northern Italy. The brick structures stand along wide streets that lead toward the factory building, which dominates the entire complex.
Cristoforo Benigno Crespi founded the settlement in 1878 as part of his textile operation along the Adda river. His son Silvio Benigno Crespi expanded the village with additional buildings and facilities for workers into the early 20th century.
The layout reflects a social order where each home has a garden and houses are scaled according to workers' positions. The church and town hall anchor the community and are linked by streets that run through the entire settlement.
The visitor center organizes guided tours through the settlement where you can see the preserved factory buildings and homes. The walking route takes you through streets and public squares that show the structure of the complex.
The factory owner's villa stands at the highest point of the settlement and looks down over the entire village. The Crespi family tomb sits in the local cemetery and is a scaled replica of the Famedio burial chapel in Milan's Monumental Cemetery.
