Museum Gherdëina, History and ethnography museum in Urtijëi, Italy

Museum Gherdëina is a regional museum in Urtijëi that houses collections related to craftsmanship, nature, and local history. The two-floor exhibition includes wood carvings, stone specimens, archaeological finds, and materials on the area's wildlife and plant life.

The museum was founded in 1960 to preserve Ladin language and heritage in the valley. This creation was part of a broader effort to document and protect local traditions during a time of regional change.

The collection displays handcrafted wooden toys and traditional objects that reflect everyday life across generations in the valley. These pieces show the skills of local artisans and their connection to the region's natural surroundings.

The museum is open year-round except on certain winter holidays. It is best to check seasonal opening hours in advance, especially if you are visiting during the colder months.

The collection includes a reconstructed skeleton of an ancient sea creature and plant fossils about 280 million years old. These fossils were discovered in the Dolomites and reveal that these mountains were once underwater.
