Rasciesa funicular, Mountain funicular in Urtijëi, Italy
Rasciesa funicular is a cable transport system that carries passengers from the village of Ortisei up to a mountain station high in the Dolomites. The ride takes visitors up steep slopes with views of the surrounding peaks and valleys.
The current system opened in 2010 and replaced an older cable car that had served the mountain before. The new installation was built to make the mountain more accessible to visitors and locals alike.
The lift goes by one name in the valley and another at the mountain station, reflecting how this region speaks two languages in daily life. Visitors will notice signs and announcements in both German and Italian throughout the journey.
The ride operates during specific seasons: summer months and winter months have different opening schedules. Bring layered clothing since conditions change with altitude and it can be quite windy at the top.
The route climbs at a very steep angle of nearly 47 percent, making it one of the steepest cable cars of its kind. At the top, visitors can ride down a long toboggan run that covers about 3 kilometers with stops along the way.
