Palazzo Podestà, Renaissance palace in central Genoa, Italy
Palazzo Podestà is a palace consisting of two connected buildings spanning multiple floors with stone facades and architectural features from the 16th century. Inside, the rooms are arranged with decorated walls and ornate ceilings that reflect the craftsmanship of the period.
The building was constructed in 1565 following the design of architect Giovanni Battista Castello and first served as an administrative headquarters for city officials and courts. Over the centuries, its purpose and use shifted as Genoa's political and social structures changed.
The interior rooms display frescoes and artworks spanning different periods, reflecting how artistic styles developed across Genoa's history. These pieces come from local and international creators, shaping how the spaces look and feel today.
The palace museum welcomes visitors throughout the year, giving you the chance to explore the various rooms and exhibitions at your own pace. It is helpful to set aside enough time for a thorough tour so you can see all areas comfortably.
The building is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Palazzi dei Rolli, a system of aristocratic palaces that shows how Genoa's ruling families organized their residences. This recognition reflects how such buildings reveal the networks of power that shaped the city across generations.
