San Girolamo della Carità
San Girolamo della Carità, Baroque church in central Rome, Italy
San Girolamo della Carità is a church featuring a single nave with multiple chapels decorated with marble statues and religious paintings throughout. The layout combines columns and arches that divide the space into sections, while windows from above bring light into the interior.
The church underwent major renovation in 1654 by architect Domenico Castello and received a new facade designed by Carlo Rainaldi in 1660. These transformations gave the building its current baroque appearance.
The church holds a notable statue of Saint Philip Neri created by Pierre Legros, positioned in a chapel designed by Filippo Juvarra. The space shows how artists and architects worked together to express religious devotion through artistic details.
The location sits in central Rome and is easily reached on foot, as it stands near other historic churches. Visitors should expect the interior to be somewhat dim and that there are steps between different levels to navigate.
The first chapel on the right, known as the Spada Chapel, displays architectural elements created through collaboration with Francesco Borromini. This chapel is often overlooked by visitors despite containing some of the most inventive details in the building.
