San Nicola dei Greci

San Nicola dei Greci is a Gothic church in the center of Altamura with a distinctive facade that features a large rose window and stone carvings depicting biblical scenes. The interior is divided into six lateral chapels, each equipped with gilded wooden altars and finely carved details.

The church was founded in 1232 under Frederick II of Swabia and originally served the Greek Orthodox community of Altamura. In 1601, it transitioned to Latin rites and changed its religious affiliation.

The interior shows how Saint Nicholas was venerated through carved details and painted stone sculptures scattered across the chapels. These artworks reflect how the local community honored this saint and kept his presence felt within the church.

The church sits on Corso Federico II di Swabia, the main street of the historic center, and is easy to spot thanks to its rose window on the facade. Access is straightforward and the building is within walking distance of other landmarks like the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta.

The wooden ceiling from the 1600s displays detailed scenes from the life of Saint Nicholas, crafted with notable skill and care. Below it sits a baptismal font made from local stone and adorned with bronze decorations, representing a different period.
