Villa di Pratolino, Renaissance villa in Vaglia, Italy

Villa di Pratolino is a Renaissance manor house in Tuscany surrounded by sprawling gardens with sculptures, fountains, and walking paths through the landscape. The property features a central building organized across multiple levels that brings together artistic and water-engineering elements.

Francesco I de' Medici commissioned this summer residence from Bernardo Buontalenti starting in 1569, using it as a private retreat. The estate was expanded through the 1600s and later fell into disrepair before partial restoration in recent decades.

The residence showcases Renaissance thinking through its architecture and garden layout, reflecting how patrons used water and sculptures to display power and knowledge. The fountains and artworks reveal a period when beauty and technical mastery were closely connected.

The site is open to visitors during warmer months and offers guided walks through the grounds. Wear sturdy shoes and allow time to explore different garden areas, as the paths cross uneven terrain and wooded sections.

One of the most striking figures is the Appennino, a colossal stone sculpture rising from the garden created by Giambologna. This larger-than-life figure was one of the most ambitious projects of its era and shows the skill needed for such monumental works.
