Sacro Monte di Varallo, Religious complex on Monte Tre Croci, Varallo Sesia, Italy
The Sacro Monte is a religious complex with 45 chapels scattered across the slopes of Monte Tre Croci at roughly 600 meters elevation. The chapels hold colorful sculptures and wall paintings that show biblical scenes set within the natural landscape.
A Franciscan monk named Bernardino Caimi founded this site in 1481 as a representation of Jerusalem for those who could not travel to the Holy Land. Over the centuries, the sanctuary grew and developed into its present form.
Local Piedmont artists and craftspeople filled each chapel with life-sized statues and paintings showing scenes from Jesus's life. The detailed work in every structure shows the devotion that shaped this sacred place for pilgrims and visitors over centuries.
Visiting all the chapels takes about three hours using marked paths that connect each building. Wearing comfortable shoes is important, as the routes go up and down the mountainside.
The sanctuary consists of two distinct zones that deliberately structure the pilgrimage journey: the lower area shows Christ's early life in green surroundings, while the upper part recreates Jerusalem's architecture. This spatial layout made the spiritual journey physically tangible.
