Hypogeum of the Volumnus family, Etruscan tomb in Ponte San Giovanni, Italy
The underground tomb complex contains ten chambers with intricate stone carvings, decorative urns, and a central hall accessed through a descending staircase.
Discovered in 1840 during road construction, this family tomb remained active from the third century BC until the first century BC.
The tomb features detailed sculptures depicting Greek mythology, funeral ceremonies, and representations of the Volumnus family members in traditional Etruscan style.
Located 5 kilometers from central Perugia, the archaeological site opens Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 to 13:30 and weekends from 9:00 to 19:00.
The main urn belongs to Arunte Volumnio, crafted in travertine stone and displaying the nobleman in a reclining position with guardian figures.
