Temple of Jupiter Feretrius, Roman temple on Capitoline Hill, Italy
The Temple of Jupiter Feretrius stands as a religious structure measuring less than 15 feet in length, featuring an altar and sacred relics inside.
Romulus established this temple around 752 BC after defeating King Acro, making it the first temple constructed in ancient Rome according to records.
The temple functioned as a repository for spolia opima, where generals deposited armor and weapons captured from enemy leaders during direct combat.
Emperor Augustus ordered renovations of the temple in 31 BC due to structural deterioration, including repairs to the damaged roof structure.
The temple contained a sacred piece of flint and a scepter used by Roman priests during official ceremonies for declaring war and establishing treaties.
