Cappella di Teodolinda

The Cappella di Teodolinda is a Gothic chapel inside Monza's cathedral decorated with painted scenes telling a royal story. The walls display about 45 scenes created with fresco and tempera techniques, adorned with gold leaf and relief details.

This chapel was built around 1400 when the cathedral was being reconstructed after earlier damage. It became the resting place of an important early medieval queen and her family members.

This chapel honors Queen Theodelinda, a Lombard ruler whose life and deeds shaped the region's early history. The scenes on the walls show how people remembered her influence and respected her memory.

You can only visit this chapel as part of a guided tour since it is located inside the cathedral. It is best to check opening hours ahead of time and arrange access in advance to ensure you can enter.

During restoration work in the 1940s, researchers discovered the remains of an early medieval queen and her son inside the chapel. This finding confirmed that the chapel had indeed served as a burial place for royalty.
