Chiesa di Santa Maria in Strada, Gothic church in Monza, Italy
Santa Maria in Strada is a Gothic church featuring a terracotta-decorated facade with a rose window and paired vertical windows arranged in bands. The rectangular interior contains a semi-octagonal choir, a presbytery, and secondary altars positioned along the side walls.
Construction started in 1348 for the Franciscan Tertiaries following designs by Ambrogio da Milano. By 1393, the building passed to Augustinian control and continued serving that community.
Inside, frescoes by Giambattista Gariboldi depict the Assumption of the Virgin Mary above the altar. These paintings reveal the spiritual focus that shaped the interior decoration over centuries.
The church is located along the street connecting Monza to Milan, making it easy to find and walk through. The open interior layout allows visitors to view all sections from the main entrance without confusion.
A stone statue of Madonna and Child from the first half of the 15th century shows influences from beyond the Alps, similar to sculptures at Milan Cathedral. This work reveals how artistic ideas flowed between Italy and northern regions during that era.
