Castle of Rapallo, Coastal fortification in Rapallo, Italy

The Castle of Rapallo is a rectangular coastal fortification on the Gulf of Rapallo featuring rounded corners, a central square tower, and a stone staircase entrance facing seaward. The structure sits directly on the waterfront and shapes the coastal profile of the town with its compact design.

Following a devastating raid by corsair Dragut in 1549, the Republic of Genoa ordered construction of this defensive structure, which was completed within one year. This rapid construction reflected the strategic urgency of protecting the Ligurian coast from seaborne attacks.

The castle contains a chapel dedicated to Saint Cajetan from 1688, reflecting the combination of military defense and religious practices of the period.

The interior is accessible for exhibitions and cultural events throughout the year, with the main entrance reached from Via Montebello. It is advisable to check opening times in advance, as availability may vary depending on scheduled events.

Every July 3rd, the fortress becomes the centerpiece of a special celebration featuring a simulated burning through fireworks and colored smoke displays that bring its protective role to life. This annual spectacle draws visitors who wish to witness the nocturnal display reflected across the water.
