Abbazia di Santa Maria in Montesanto

The Santa Maria in Montesanto Abbey displays substantial stone walls, pronounced arches, and a separate bell tower positioned near the main building.

Founded in 542 by Saint Benedict during his return from Ascoli Piceno, the abbey received its first official documentation in a manuscript dated 1064.

Located at the boundary between Papal and Neapolitan territories, the abbey accumulated extensive lands and religious privileges through medieval donations.

Visitors can reach the abbey through Via Monte Santo, which leads to the complex situated in the hills outside Civitella del Tronto.

The original single-nave structure underwent a complete transformation in the 13th century, resulting in a three-nave configuration that remains today.
