Castello Svevo, Medieval fortress in Brindisi, Italy
The castle features a trapezoidal courtyard with high walls, reinforced by seven towers of different shapes, including round, square, and pentagonal structures.
Emperor Frederick II initiated the construction of Castello Svevo in 1227, following his marriage to Isabella II of Jerusalem and before his departure for the Crusade.
The castle incorporates materials from ancient Roman structures of Brindisi, reflecting the architectural practices and resource utilization of medieval Italian builders.
The fortress currently serves as a command center for the Marina Militare and requires advance booking for group tours through the designated phone number.
The castle underwent modifications in the 15th century to accommodate firearms, including the addition of sloped round towers and a new lower wall system.
