Castello Svevo, Medieval fortress in Brindisi, Italy
Castello Svevo is a medieval fortress in Brindisi built around a trapezoidal courtyard surrounded by high thick walls reinforced by seven towers of varied shapes including round, square, and pentagonal forms. The towers create a strong defensive perimeter that defines the structure's distinctive profile.
Emperor Frederick II commenced construction in 1227 shortly after his marriage to Isabella II of Jerusalem and before departing for the Crusade. The structure underwent major modifications in the 15th century to accommodate the use of firearms.
The fortress reuses materials and structural elements from ancient Roman Brindisi, demonstrating how medieval builders incorporated older constructions into their work. You can see these layers of history woven into the walls themselves.
The fortress currently serves as a command center for the Italian Navy and requires advance arrangements for visits, particularly for group tours. It is best to contact ahead and plan your visit in advance.
The fortress was redesigned in the 15th century with specially sloped round towers built to accommodate and effectively use cannons and firearms. This adaptation demonstrates how medieval structures were modernized for new military technology.
