Visconti Castle, Medieval castle in Vercelli, Italy
Visconti Castle is a medieval fortification in Vercelli with four corner towers and a square floor plan built around a central inner courtyard. Two entrances on opposite sides once allowed controlled access to the entire compound.
Matteo I Visconti had this fortress built in 1290 to demonstrate his rule over the region. In the 17th century the structure suffered damage during a Spanish assault but was later restored.
The castle carries the Visconti family name and now houses the court of Vercelli, making it a key public building for the city. The thick walls and inner courtyard speak of an era when such fortifications were the center of civic power.
The castle stands beside Piazza Amedeo IX di Savoia and can be viewed from outside, though the interior remains closed to the public. The best views of the outer walls and towers come from the square or the surrounding streets.
During a Spanish military campaign in 1638 the castle sustained damage, yet residents of Vercelli worked together to rebuild it. This collective effort to save the structure is often an overlooked part of the local story.
