Canto Alto, Mountain peak in Bergamo Alps, Italy.
Canto Alto is a mountain peak in the Parco dei Colli di Bergamo, in the Lombardy region of northern Italy, and the highest point within the park. The summit is marked by a large metal cross that stands visible from the valleys below.
During the Middle Ages the mountain was used as a lookout post, first with a wooden watchtower and later with a stone fort built to replace it. These structures helped to watch over the surrounding valleys in the Bergamo area.
The metal cross at the top was placed to remember soldiers who died in both World Wars and the victims of the Dalmine bombings. People often leave flowers or small offerings near the cross when they visit.
The climb calls for a reasonable level of fitness and proper footwear, as the path can be steep in places. The route from Monte di Nese is the most commonly used approach, though other paths lead up from nearby villages.
On clear days the summit offers a view that reaches far north toward the main Alpine chain, making it a popular weekend destination for people from Bergamo. Despite being so close to the city, the path up feels remote once you leave the lower slopes.
