Parco dei Colli di Bergamo, Regional natural park in Province of Bergamo, Italy
Parco dei Colli di Bergamo is a regional park and nature reserve spread across ten municipalities at the edge of Bergamo, reaching toward the Alpine foothills of northern Lombardy. The terrain is made up of woodlands, hillsides and deep valleys crossed by old paths and stone steps.
The area was designated as Lombardy's third regional park in 1977, then expanded in 2007 to cover more municipalities. Benedictine monks had already settled here from the 11th century onward, permanently reshaping the land through terracing and new paths.
The Road of the Benedictine Monasteries connects four medieval abbeys through the Astino and Valmarina valleys, where monastic communities shaped the land over centuries. Old stone walls, chapels and terraced fields are still visible today, showing how religious life once organized this territory.
The trail network is well marked and covers options from gentle walks to steep climbs, making the park open to a wide range of fitness levels. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions for walking, when paths are less slippery and the woodland is easier to move through.
The park's bedrock dates back to the Triassic period, making it hundreds of millions of years old, and this ancient geology creates soil conditions that support habitats rarely found in the surrounding region. Some plant and animal species living here are not found anywhere else nearby.
