San Giovanni Battista, Highway A11

The San Giovanni Battista church features stone walls, copper roofing that turned green with time, and an asymmetrical layout with curved elements.

Architect Giovanni Michelucci designed and constructed this religious structure between 1960 and 1963 as a memorial for workers who died building the highway.

Inside the church, decorative elements include works from Italian artists Marcello Avenali, Jorio Vivarelli, Dilvo Lotti, and Luigi Venturini using marble and bronze.

Visitors can access the church on foot from a local road outside the highway network, making it available to both travelers and local residents.

The building rises 27.5 meters high and combines a traditional cross-shaped floor plan with modern architectural elements in a highway rest area setting.
