Stagni di Focognano, Protected wetland area in Campi Bisenzio, Italy.

The Stagni di Focognano comprises five interconnected ponds of varying depths and sizes that create diverse wetland habitats. These waterways are ringed with reed beds and marshy vegetation that support different species throughout the seasons.

The site gained protection in 1995 as one of the last remaining marshlands of the original Florence plain landscape. This designation reversed decades of habitat loss in a region increasingly altered by urban and agricultural development.

This protected wetland serves as a learning center where groups come to observe water birds and amphibians in their natural habitat. It demonstrates how local communities engage in hands-on nature study and wildlife watching.

This area is best visited from September through May when pathways are manageable and migratory birds are present. Plan to enter from the access point on Viale Primaldo Paolieri where you can safely leave your vehicle and begin walking the reserve.

This location serves as a critical way station for thousands of migratory birds including black-winged stilts, kingfishers, and peregrine falcons. Birdwatchers find opportunities here to spot species that are otherwise rare in the broader region.
