Chiesa delle Anime del Purgatorio, Baroque church in Trapani, Italy
Chiesa delle Anime del Purgatorio is a Baroque church in Trapani with a facade decorated by twelve stucco statues of the Apostles. Inside, twenty wooden sculptural groups depict scenes from the Passion of Christ.
Construction began in 1688 under architect Pietro Lo Castro, with the facade completed in 1712 by Giovanni Biagio Amico. The church was among the last building projects that added to Trapani's rich Baroque character.
The church houses twenty wooden sculptural groups depicting the Passion of Christ, paraded annually during Easter Week's Processione dei Misteri. These works were commissioned by different local guilds and remain central to how the community expresses its faith.
The church is open during regular visiting hours and offers multilingual informational panels to understand the wooden sculptures. Note that the wooden figures are removed during Easter Week for the annual procession.
Each wooden figure group was commissioned by a different local guild, reflecting the wide participation of the city in this religious tradition. The Ascent of Calvary sculpture particularly represents the entire Trapani community.
