Forte Ciuto

Forte Ciuto is a military fortification located on the northern hills above Savona at approximately 400 meters elevation with commanding views over the port areas and coastal region. The structure features reinforced towers and buildings designed to create a strong defensive position.

The fortification was built in 1885 by the Royal Army Engineering Corps of Turin to defend the Ligurian coast from attacks. It formed part of a larger network of defenses constructed along the coast during this expansion period.

This fort was built as part of a defensive network protecting Savona's coast and reflects the military priorities of the era. The structure still conveys how seriously the region approached coastal security.

Access to the fort is via unmaintained roads beginning from the battery of Nostra Signora degli Angeli that require careful navigation. Wearing sturdy footwear is advisable, and it is wise to check path conditions before visiting since the site has minimal infrastructure.

The fort featured specialized disappearing towers that concealed artillery guns and could be quickly raised when needed. This technological solution was an innovative 19th-century defensive strategy against modern naval fire.
