Werk Corte

Werk Corte is a stone fortification from the 1800s with a rectangular layout, three levels above ground, and one basement level. The structure was built with massive stone blocks and features strategically positioned observation points to control the surrounding mountain passes.

The fort was built in 1897 as part of the Austro-Hungarian defensive network to protect the border against Italian threats through the mountain passes. After the war ended, the structure was gradually abandoned and left to decline.

The fort reflects the military history between Italy and Austria-Hungary that shaped this Alpine border region. Today visitors can see how such structures were central to the defense strategies of competing powers in the mountains.

Access is by way of Regional Road 48 through the Dolomites, with signs directing visitors toward the villages of Corte and Contrin. The best time to visit is during warmer months, as access can be difficult in winter and early spring.

During wartime the fort housed around 170 soldiers within its chambers. Later it opened its walls to civilians who had lost their homes during the intense bombardments of the First World War.
