Funivia del Lagazuoi, Cable car system in Falzarego Pass, Italy
The Funivia del Lagazuoi is a cable car that connects Falzarego Pass at 2105 meters with the summit station at 2732 meters. The system operates without support pillars and covers roughly 1150 meters of open span.
The cable car first opened in 1964 with wooden stations and cabins designed for 25 passengers. A major upgrade to steel structures took place in 1987.
The cable car provides access to mountain paths where visitors can walk through trenches and fortifications from World War I. These sites show how the Dolomites served as a front line during the conflict.
Modern cabins carry up to 50 passengers and cross the span in less than three minutes. The ride operates in most weather conditions, though poor visibility may affect access to some mountain trails.
The cabins hang freely like hot air balloon baskets and are suspended by four cables without a drive mechanism attached. This design significantly reduces structural stress during operation.
