Cinque Torri, Mountain formation in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy
Cinque Torri is a mountain formation featuring five main rock towers that reach 2,361 meters and display distinctive grey dolomite rock formations. The steep limestone walls and ridges create a notable outline visible from multiple points across the region.
During World War I, the area served as a fortified military position in the mountain warfare between Austria and Italy. Remains of trenches, fortifications, and monuments remain visible today, documenting this significant chapter in Alpine history.
The rock towers have become a central destination for climbers and mountaineers from around the world who practice their craft on these faces. The climbing tradition has deeply shaped how visitors experience and interact with the landscape.
A chairlift from Bai de Dones provides direct access to the upper area, making it easy to reach the towers without extensive climbing. Mountain refuges nearby offer meals and accommodation, serving as useful bases for exploring the formation or hiking in the surrounding region.
Despite its name suggesting five towers, the formation actually consists of more than ten distinct rock pinnacles. These additional towers often go unnoticed by visitors but offer equally rewarding views and climbing opportunities as the main peaks.
