Cortina d'Ampezzo, Winter sports resort in Belluno Province, Italy
Cortina d'Ampezzo is a commune in a valley surrounded by the Dolomite peaks in Belluno Province, Italy. The settlement stands at 1,224 meters elevation and provides access to wide-ranging ski terrain with cable cars and mountain huts reaching higher zones.
The commune shifted from Habsburg to Italian administration in 1920 after the First World War. In 1956 it welcomed the Winter Olympics and built new sports venues across the surrounding mountains.
Residents speak Ampezzano in daily conversation and during local gatherings, keeping the Ladin dialect alive alongside Italian. This linguistic tradition gives the valley its distinctive character and connects families to their mountain heritage.
The winter season runs from December to April, with routes to lifts and huts usually signposted and readily accessible. Equipment rental and ski pass outlets are available in several shops around the town center.
The free-standing bell tower of the church Santi Filippo e Giacomo from the 1770s stands in the town center and still serves locals as a landmark. Its Baroque onion dome distinguishes it from most Italian church towers.
