Averau, Mountain summit in Province of Belluno, Italy
Averau is a summit in the Nuvolau Group of the Dolomites that rises to 2,649 meters and features steep rock faces and characteristic limestone formations. Its distinctive shape is defined by these rock structures and is easily recognizable from a distance.
The first recorded ascent of this summit occurred on August 10, 1874, when Austrian writer Richard Issler and guide Santo Siorpaes reached the peak. This climb marked a significant moment in the mountaineering history of the Dolomites.
The mountain sits within a region where climbers and hikers have traveled for generations. This tradition shapes how people today approach and respect these peaks.
Access to the summit is via the Averau ferrata route, which starts from Rifugio Averau at 2,413 meters where climbing equipment is available. Sturdy footwear and familiarity with ferrata techniques are needed for this route.
The mountain lies between Falzarego Pass and Giau Pass in a position where several other well-known Dolomite peaks become visible. From this vantage point, visitors can clearly see Civetta, Pelmo, and Tofana.
